Defining Success

Defining and measuring success is a tricky thing because each business area defines success differently. If you think about how an IT project manager defines success then compare that to a sales associate’s definition of success, you will see they are different.

Why are they different? It comes down to how the employee is measured and rewarded. The IT project manager is measured and rewarded for delivering projects on time and on budget. The sales associate is measured and rewarded based on the number of successful sales. This does not mean that one definition of success cannot be a driver for another but it does mean that it is beneficial to understand the many different definitions of success in your organization.

Why is defining success important? It really comes down to setting expectations. By understanding what each business area defines as success, it enables the product team to work toward success for all instead of success for one.
